The Houston chapter has been fighting in our area and in Texas for over 25 years. Americans United has been fighting to protect the separation of church and state for nearly 75 years. Our nation and our state promise everyone the freedom to believe as we want, but our laws should not grant special privileges to religion when it puts public health and safety at risk. It could even prevent emergency responders from closing a house of worship if there were a nearby hazardous spill, stop a governor from issuing or enforcing evacuation orders during a hurricane if it meant limiting access to a house of worship, and it could prevent a fire marshal from ensuring a house of worship complies with occupancy limits and emergency exit requirements.
Prop 3 will make it more difficult for government officials to protect Texans during future public health emergencies. Every Texan should be alarmed at the passage of this dangerous amendment to the Texas Constitution, fueled by misinformation and the politicization of the public health response to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Sadly, Prop 3 was approved by the approximately 9% of registered voters who turned out. The Houston chapter of Americans United worked hard to educate Texas voters about Prop 3, an amendment to the state constitution that prohibits limits on religious services for *any reason* no matter what the scale of potential danger is to others.
